Last Week’s Top Free Apps on Google Play (and the Apps People Actually Use)

July 21, 2026

I was scrolling the Google Play charts last week and did a small double take. The apps sitting at the top of the free list were not the ones I open every day. A short-drama app and a couple of oddball puzzle games were riding high, while the usual giants were nowhere near the top. Before I just copy the list down, it helps to explain what this chart actually measures.

Last week’s top free apps on Google Play (US)

Here is the Google Play “Top Free” list as of July 18, 2026, read from SimilarWeb and cross-checked against AppMagic. Past the first few spots the order shifts depending on which source you trust, so treat this as roughly these apps, this week, rather than a fixed one to ten.

Rank App What it is
1 ChatGPT Conversational AI assistant
2 PineDrama – Short Dramas Vertical short-form micro-drama streaming
3 Smash Fest! Casual puzzle game
4 TikTok Pro – Events A TikTok-branded entertainment app; the listing does not make its exact purpose obvious
5 TikTok Short-video social app
6 WhatsApp Messaging app from Meta
7 Meowdoku Cat-themed sudoku puzzle game
8 Instagram Photo and video social network
9 Roblox Online game and creation platform
10 Facebook Social network from Meta

Why “top free” is not “most used”

This chart ranks download momentum, not how much people actually use an app. The apps everyone already has, the ones you live in, do not pick up many fresh installs, so they sit low. Meanwhile an app running a big ad push or catching a sudden trend can spike to the top for a week and drop again. That is why short-drama apps, hyper-casual games, and lightweight social apps cluster up here.

So what do people actually open?

Switch from installs to usage and the familiar names come right back:

  1. Chrome
  2. Google Messages
  3. Facebook
  4. YouTube
  5. Gmail
  6. Messenger
  7. Instagram
  8. Google Maps

The very top of the usage list is mostly pre-installed Google and Samsung apps. Strip those out and you get the list above, which is much closer to what most people would call the popular apps.

A few things that stood out

ChatGPT held the number one spot on the momentum chart. AI assistants are a fixture near the top now, not a novelty that shows up once and fades. Short-form video and micro-drama were everywhere, from PineDrama to a stack of TikTok-branded apps, with DramaBox sitting just outside the ten. And two small puzzle games, one of them cat-themed sudoku, rode install spikes into the top ten, which is very on brand for how this chart behaves.

The takeaway

When you read a Play Store chart, separate rising from most used. Last week’s rising list leaned on AI, short drama, and casual games, while the apps people actually spend their day in were still Chrome, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. Charts move every week, so treat this as a mid-July 2026 snapshot. App names follow their Play Store listings, and the ranking comes from SimilarWeb cross-checked with AppMagic.
